Cooper & Barr

We're bringing the latest design finds to the North East!

We are feeling inspired and invigorated after sharing 3 full days with over 8000 vibrant and innovative eye care specialists!

Having just returned from London’s ‘100% Optical 2015’ - one of Europe’s largest eye care events – we’re really excited to bring some of our latest design and style finds to the North East.

One such find, is the British designer TD Tom Davies. His handmade, bespoke range of frames offers a perfect, made-to-measure fit, combining exceptional comfort and luxury style at a surprisingly reasonable price.

Another favourite of ours is the Swiss designed, ‘Gotti’. Renowned for their designer quality and high-end design, these beautifully crafted, stylish frames are made in super-strong titanium, and are bang on trend with a great range of new colours.

We’re also really into the Danish designer, ‘Lindberg’. Steeped in the Danish design tradition of discreet, classic elegance and carefully considered simplicity, their incredibly lightweight, rimless frames are simply beautiful.

We also came across some really unique frames made from wood, hemp and even buffalo horn – it’s clearly a really exciting time for eye wear design! All of our latest finds will soon be available in our Cooper and Barr stores, so for an up-to-date look for Spring, you’ll have the pick of the bunch.

Expansion In Sight For Independent Opticians

INDEPENDENT opticians, Cooper & Barr has opened its doors in Thirsk.

The family-run business, which spans over three generations, brings their total number of premises to four with practices already in Stokesley, Sedgefield and Coulby Newham.

Based at 21 Market Place, their newest store marks a significant year of growth for Cooper & Barr who are celebrating their 90th birthday this year.

Cooper & Barr is located in the Market Place in the heart of the town centre, and offers a wide range of designer eyewear and contact lenses for adults and children from brands including Tiffany, Prada and Oakley.

They also provide a full eye examination service, which unlike regular eye tests provide a more in-depth health check of their customer’s eyes.

The business has already taken on one new member of staff following the opening of the opticians and is already planning for future expansion of the team.

Expanding into North Yorkshire, co-owner Nicola Cooper-Heenan felt that the development would be a natural extension to the business.

Nicola said: “Our new Thirsk store is in a brilliant location right on Market Place – as experienced opticians, we understand the need for top quality and designer eyewear, and we have used our expertise to provide a complete dedicated service for people in the area.

“The practice has a full range of exclusive frames alongside the latest state-of-the-art equipment. Our Optomap eye tests may take twice as long but that’s because they are four times more detailed than regular eye tests.”

Clear Vision Ahead

CONTINUING to invest in its services and offering, we have recently opened a new practice in Sedgefield alongside undergoing a successful rebranding of our business.

Bringing our total number up-to three, with practices already in Stokesley and Coulby Newham, we chose to expand after identifying a need for a local opticians in the County Durham area and felt that the progression would be a natural expansion for us.

Work carried out at the new Cooper & Barr practice in Sedgefield includes a fresh frontage, retro mid-century feel interior and signage displaying our new strapline 'Daring Vision since 1925.'

This strap line encapsulates the new brand direction, without dismissing any of the heritage. From the in-depth approach of the clinical staff, to the carefully curated range of exclusive frames.

We are proud to give a little extra care to customers, to look a little deeper at fashion for those who see the value as more than just the price.

“As an independent family-run company, which has been running for almost 90 years, you have to compete in the optometry business against the big High Street names and move with the times” said Nicola Cooper-Heenan, co-owner of Cooper & Barr.

“We have continuously invested in state-of-the-art equipment as well as the best staff and now we have recognised that the look of our practices needs to better reflect the contemporary industry we work in.”

Located at 10 Sedgefield High Street, the refurbishment included completely stripping out the former shop fit replacing with new wall displays, flooring, electrics, light fittings and furniture.

The refurbishment also saw us adding new optometry equipment including bringing specialist Optomap Retinal Imaging to the Sedgefield area.

Alongside the refit and rebrand, we have also revamped our marketing literature, social media pages and we are embarking on a 12-month marketing plan.

Expanding our professional cover, our new Sedgefield practice has employed a full-time qualified Dispensing Optician alongside two new optometrists to ensure their new customers get the best service possible.

Cooper & Barr also have plans for an apprenticeship role which would eventually lead to full-time employment.

“We have expansion and improvement in our sights and a clear vision of growth – our plan is to invest in new practices, increase staff, keep up-to-date with all the latest technology and further grow Cooper & Barr.”

“It's a really exciting time for the business – we are just a few months away from our 90th anniversary and we look forward to taking the company into its ninth decade,” added Nicola.

Raising Our Glasses To Celebrate 90th Birthday

We are raising our glasses to celebrate 90 years in the optometry business.

First opening our doors in 1925 on Grange Road in Middlesbrough town centre, Cooper & Barr now have three practices across the region in Stokesley, Sedgefield and Coulby Newham serving over 25, 000 patients with exciting expansion plans in the pipeline.

As a family-run business spanning over three generations, William and Evelyn Cooper opened their first practice 90 years ago. The practice then moved to Borough Road where its iconic marble frontage with a neon sign was quite the sight in the 1930s.

The business then became Cooper & Flower in the 1970s before changing to Cooper & Barr in 2012.

“We are very proud to be celebrating 90 years in the business and I am delighted that my family have been involved for all ninety of those years” said Nicola Cooper-Heenan, co-owner of Cooper & Barr.

To sit alongside our milestone birthday, we have undergone a rebrand of their business encapsulating the company’s new strapline ‘Daring Vision since 1925.’

Showcasing the new brand direction, without dismissing any of the heritage, we are proud to give a little extra care to customers - from the in-depth approach of the clinical staff to the carefully curated range of exclusive designer frames.

Going from strength to strength, the business has successfully developed a large and loyal customer base due to our extensive eye examinations and as stockists of major brands including Tiffany & Co., Prada and Michael Kors.

Nicola added: “It is a great achievement for the business and without the continued support from our local communities we would not be able to celebrate such a significant milestone. We are already looking forward to the next 90 years – wherever they may take us – with excitement and enthusiasm.”
