“Eyes are the window to your soul”

Optometry is in my genes, and having worked in the industry for nearly 20 years I recognise the importance of regular in-depth eye health checks for all ages. I now work across our three practices based in Stokesley, Sedgefield and Thirsk and my colleagues and I are even more passionate about looking after your eyes.

Throughout my time as an Optometrist I’ve met a lot of people who find buying glasses can be a reluctant purchase, for a variety of reasons, but usually due to a lack of confidence about how they look in specs.

I love spending money on clothes, handbags, and shoes as much as the next person but glasses can also be an item that can complement your appearance. And one aspect of my job I really enjoy is helping customers find eyewear that improves their vision and makes them feel good about it too!

“Always looking for the next best brand, always looking for the best product for our customers.”

The brands we stock are carefully selected from suppliers who care about creating high quality and individually designed frames. At Cooper & Barr we offer unique frames suitable to wear everyday.

I fully understand why some people find choosing glasses difficult but it’s important to me that we are able to make that process easier for you - including free consultations to finding out what colour and shape suits you best, you can be sure that you’re in good hands when coming to us!

So, take it from us your eyes really are the window to your soul, they express your personality in the best possible way. Make sure you make the right impression. Remember...

“You could have a great pair of shoes or a great suit, but people are first connecting with your face, so finding the right pair of glasses is crucial” - Garrett Leight

All eyes on the menu as independent businesses team up

Local independent opticians Cooper & Barr have teamed up with award winning restaurant Brasserie Hudson Quay to loan ready reader glasses to customers.

Customers who take advantage of this unique idea will get high quality visibility over the Michelin star menu when dining at the popular Middlehaven restaurant.

Cooper & Barr, a family run business spanning over 3 generations, have been in the optometry industry since 1925, and this new initiative supports their focus on caring about eye health.

Nicola Cooper-Heenan, co-owner of Cooper & Barr said: “We’ve chosen this partnership as we feel it’s something that reflects our company's ethos.

“As eyecare professionals, we often hear from our clients that they struggle to read the menu under the ambient lighting in restaurants – particularly if they've forgotten their glasses. When the need for reading glasses is an essential part of life, there is always panic when we forget them.  So we wanted to put a stop to that.”

“Although we do encourage our patients to ensure glasses are professionally prescribed; ready readers are a great short term fix for spectacle wearers when dining out.”

Cooper & Barr are currently celebrating 90 years in the optometry business with three successful practices across the Tees Valley, County Durham and North Yorkshire area.

The products they offer are wide ranging, from designer eyewear to contact lenses for adults through to children.

They also specialise in glasses trends, making sure the latest styles and shapes are  available throughout each practice. Customers can choose between the major brands stocked including Tiffany & Co., Prada and Michael Kors.

Nicola said: “Celebrating 90 years of Cooper & Barr is a great achievement for our business and if it wasn’t for our loyal customers, we wouldn’t have been able to do so. We’re looking forward to the next 90 years.”

Cooper & Barr are providing customers at the Brasserie with a short-term solution for reading the great menu, all those that take advantage of these glasses and complete an entry form will be placed in to a prize draw each month for a £50 voucher to spend at Cooper & Barr.

Children's Summer Eyecare

17th July 2015

As the Summer season is here, eye care will be the last thing on our mind as we go through our holiday checklists.

However, eye checkups are essential as they help us determine if your health is being maintained.

Here at Cooper and Barr we know that every 1 in 5 children have uncorrected vision, therefore we recommend that all children have regular checkups from the age 4+ to lower the risk of permanently reduced vision.

Therefore, as children under 16 already receive their FREE eye tests on the NHS, we also offer vouchers to help towards the cost of glasses in our vast range of frames and if eyewear isn’t what your children prefer, we can even fit contacts to children as young as 8!

Taking a child for an eye check up can be a pain but we aim to make it fun for children and as quick and easy as possible for you.

Pop into one of our stores and make an appointment today.

Did you know that we are celebrating our 90th anniversary?

17th July 2015

Did you know that we are celebrating our 90th anniversary? Since our first opening in 1925 on Middlesbrough’s Grange Road, our business has evolved into 3 practices across North Yorkshire and County Durham..

The recent opening of our Thirsk practice marked a significant year of growth for our family-run business.

Serving 25,000 patients, we pride ourselves upon our experienced Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians providing 90 years of excellent customer service.

To celebrate our milestone, our company has rebranded, encapsulating our important heritage with a new strapline “Daring vision since 1925".

Since our launch we have increased phenomenally in strength, which is shown with our extensive range of designer eyewear.

Sitting on our shelves are brands such as Prada, Dior, Michael Kors, Etnia Barcelona, Maui Jim and Joules, each aiming to add some luxury to our customers eyewear.

In addition to this, we use an Optomap Retinal Imaging machine designed to give an in depth analysis into our customers eye health.

Unlike other retinal imaging, the Optomap scans the entirety of the eye, giving details of how your eye health is being maintained whilst tracing for diseases such as glaucoma.

Although it may take a little more of your time, they are four times more detailed than the normal checkups - so it’s worth your effort.

We understand that glasses are a big part of your personal identity, so we only select the finest high quality styles to ensure that our customers feel confident in whatever they choose.

This anniversary is a massive achievement for our business, however, without the support we’ve received from our clientele we wouldn’t be able to celebrate.

We have high hopes for the future and hope you join us every step of the way.

Here’s to another 90 years!

Are you clear about cataracts?

Did you know that we routinely check for the development of cataracts during your regular eye appointments? Yet, despite being the leading cause of vision loss worldwide, many people are still unsure what cataracts are, how they are caused, and what to do about them. Here’s our jargon-free explanation.

What are they?

Cataracts are a natural result of aging. As the eye’s lens grows older, dead cells accumulate, turning the lens yellow and cloudy. This is a cataract, and as the cells build up, it makes it harder to see.

What are the symptoms?

A cataract starts off quite small, but as it grows, you may notice your vision becomes cloudy or blurred, things might appear ‘fuzzy’, lights may seem too bright, and oncoming headlights might cause more glare than before. You may also start to need more light when doing close work.

Can I prevent cataracts?

Much as we’d all like to wave a magic wand, the process of aging is unavoidable. However, the progression of cataracts can be slowed down by some lifestyle changes. Stopping smoking, eating a balanced diet (including lots of vitamin E) and wearing sunglasses with 100% UV protection can all help to slow down the development of cataracts.

How are they treated?

If your cataracts have developed to the point where they seriously impact on your daily life, cataract surgery is a simple, highly perfected option to restore sight. During surgery, the clouded lens is removed and replaced with a clear, plastic lens.

So, if you ever want to talk to us about cataracts, or have any questions, please just pop in to see us, or use our free ‘Ask an Optometrist’ email service.

'Vista Mesh' - new help for migraine sufferers

Migraine affects a staggering 15% of us, and it’s symptoms and frequency can be really debilitating. But 20% of sufferers also experience visual problems, known as ‘aura,’ before their headache.

These more unusual symptoms might include seeing zigzag patterns, flashing lights or parts of an object appearing to vanish. Some will experience an aura without developing a headache. Others may become hypersensitive to light or touch. Certainly, migraine can affect people in a number of different ways. But there is something that can help.

Research has shown, that glare from overhead fluorescent lights and flicker from computer screens often trigger symptoms. At Cooper and Barr, we have specialist ‘Vista Mesh’ lenses, available in plain form or with prescription, which can actually help to reduce the visual symptoms of your migraine. ‘Vista Mesh’ lenses have an invisible micromesh filter built into the lens, and are scientifically developed to reduce flicker and deflect electromagnetic radiation - drastically reducing symptoms of ‘aura’.

It’s worth noting that many people with dyslexia also use Vista Mesh lenses, as they have been found to help increase concentration, align scattered light reflections and enhance text on the page. So, if certain aspects of everyday life affect your vision, just speak to one of our team for a free trial of Vista Mesh lenses.
